B.E. S.E.E.N. (Bias Education)

Supplement Your Existing D.E.I. Programs & Initiatives

Rather than replace what you’re already doing to address diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and access, our goal is to weave our program into your existing initiatives and support them, creating an environment that allows everyone to share their perspective and experiences without fear of discrimination or marginalization due to their differing beliefs. This work requires personal growth, but that’s a journey better undertaken together.

Support Your Sales and Customer Service Teams

Bias can block your sales team from success and your customer service team’s ability to keep clients satisfied. This training equips them with the tools to recognize and overcome the biases they may hold that are stopping them from success, or the biases that may stop others from leaning in to listen to them.

The Cost of Unchallenged Bias

This training will show you how to overcome the unchecked bias in your organization that is:

  • Blocking the flow of communication
  • Creating misunderstandings
  • Escalating conflicts
  • Bringing productivity to a halt
  • Leading to high turnover
  • Resulting in dissatisfied customers that harm your brand’s reputation

Studies estimate the costs of unchallenged bias are around $4,000 to $6,000 per team member. That doesn’t include the costs of turnover due to toxic environments or lawsuits. It also doesn’t include the impact to the bottom line from dissatisfied clients when miscommunication leads to slow service or poor quality.

Fighting Bias with Fiction

Fiction provides a unique tool in the arsenal of helping people spot and address their personal biases in a supportive, collaborative environment. By stepping into the shoes of the characters, they see the world through those characters’ eyes. It allows them a safe space to recognize and challenge their biases.

Why Our “Novel” Approach Works

When multiple people read the same novel, it provides them a common language to use in discussions. Participants can then compare their own personal experiences with these characters and with other participants in the program. This provides them a unique perspective they would not gain otherwise while acting as a starting point in empathetic conversations that empower all parties to contribute.

“One reason fiction works so well in the workplace is that characters, plots, and settings in foreign locales help anchor difficult discussions. The narrative allows participants to work through sensitive and nuanced issues in an open and honest manner. ” – Christine Seifert, Harvard Business Review

That’s why we incorporate Nikki T. Anthony’s debut novel, The Price We Pay, into our training.

Turn Bias into an Asset Rather Than a Liability

When people understand why their biases exist and the positive side of it, they can leverage their biases to work for – instead of against – them, deploying the 4 keys to overcoming bias:

S)ervice: Bringing a sincere desire to serve into every interaction

E)mpathy: Trying to see things as others do

E)mpowerment: Looking for ways to support others in their efforts and growth

N)egotiation: Working toward win-win solutions that benefit everyone involved
